Take Me Out to the Ball Game …

Yesterday, for the first time since Covid changed the world, I got to Nationals Park. I love baseball. I love going to the ballpark and everything about it, except finding a parking space. I enjoy the pace, the overpriced food, the fact that unlike football, it is non violent, save the occasional bench clearing brawls. I enjoy the crowd engagement, the noise and parents bringing their offspring, especially the little ones to the game. The crowd had a good sprinkling of the young ones, even babies in Nationals themed onesies. The weather was pristine, blue sky, high 70s, low humidity and a gentle breeze. You could not possibly script a better day. As Billy Beane said in Moneyball “How can you not be romantic about baseball?”

The Nationals broke an 8-game losing streak with a 9-3 victory over the Phillies. Juan Soto’s 3-run blast in the bottom of the second inning captured the fans’ imagination and they never let go. There was the wave your cap rally …

Soto Fan Apprentice

followed a couple of innings later by a slowly building wave. Sparse at first, by the fourth time around the whole crowd was into it. Rookie pitcher Jackson Tetreault posted his first career win with 7 strong innings and the Nat’s bullpen brought it home. For Nats fans it was smiles all around, with a 24-46 record, a rare thing.  I repeat “How can you not be romantic about baseball?”
