No Escape
July 20, 2024If you are anywhere on the East Coast, actually almost anywhere in the continental USA, you are probably experiencing some intense hot weather this July. In an effort to escape the high 90s and equivalent humidity in the metro D.C. area we hopped a 52 minute Jet Blue flight to Martha’s Vineyard. Surely the weather would be nicer there, blue skies, soft breezes and low humidity. Uh, no. The five days we spent were unusually warm for MV, temps in the mid to high eighties with oppressive humidity averaging over 90% with occasional rain. The rare breezes offered little relief.
We stayed at a nice small hotel in Vineyard Haven, a very walkable area, but walking around with my camera bag under flat light skies was uninspiring. That said, when the skies were cloudy bright colors of the plantings, including the ubiquitous hydrangeas, became more saturated.
I was determined not to be defeated by the weather. We actually did get a few hours of blue sky and sunshine during the Tisbury Street Fair and during a walk around Edgartown.
With no defined theme in mind, this became an occasion for random captures, a photographic potpourri if you will.
In the end it came down to this. I didn’t produce any great art, but we got in some nice family time with my brother and his family, ate at two fine restaurants and one terrific diner, and the last evening I grabbed this romantic shot of a bistro table and flowers in the rain, missing is Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant huddled together under a red umbrella … or, if you are too young to know who they are, maybe Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. C’est la vie.
