BEACH TOWNS: OFF SEASON

Fenwick Island

I like to take a  break in the fall , two or three days, somewhere along the Delaware and Maryland beach towns. This year I chose Fenwick Island, DE adjacent to Ocean City MD. By mid-October the towns are pretty much emptied of tourists, room rates are lower and reservations aren’t required in most restaurants. The boardwalk amusement parks are shut down, , but Kohr Bros. frozen custard and Dumser’s Dairy Land are still open, so strolling along with a tasty cone in hand is a treasured fall ritual. The boardwalk, beach and crashing waves make good subjects, enjoy these.

More seagulls than tourists

Other than the shoreline, I really didn’t find much to capture around Fenwick. It is mostly one strip center after another, lots of shout outs for crab spots. My wife Amy has a theory, the more photos of food you see on a restaurant’s window, the lousier the food is. For the most part, I have found that to be true. The same could be said for the crab hucksters. The more screaming signage, e.g. “Best Crabs in Town” in six foot letters, or The Crab Bags signs -  “Three Bars!” and “All NFL games” in lights, tell me it is a tourist trap. The desk clerk at Fenwick Shores suggested a little unassuming place, Rusty Jimmies for steamed crab. It is an unassuming little place, no bar (it’s BYOB), and walls covered with kids drawings of crabs. Chris, the owner, is also the fisherman who pulls the crabs out of the bay in the morning for the days offerings. My friend Phil and I knocked off a dozen of the tastiest extra large crabs I have ever had. September and October are the months for the heaviest crabs and these did not disappoint.

I’ll close this with a couple of more shots of Fenwick’s waters …
