A Brief Interlude
My son Max and I are visiting New Zealand. While my regular updates on my web site are on pause, the venues here just beg to be shared. Here are a few starting with a view of Auckland from the 60th floor of Sky City
Auckland has taken what used to be a seedy area around the waterfront and morphed it into a family friendly environment with restaurants and play area. The 4-story staircase on the left offers up views of the waterfront and city.
Views from the 4-story stairs. That's the Sky Tower in the background and the park with the shallow pool, dogs and kids love that.
Below, morning at the Fish Market.
Auckland's architecture is pointedly contemporary, but unlike the tiresome glass and steel structures in many cities, these building use a mix of materials, cantilevering and other techniques to make the buildings visually compelling. There are still a number of older low-rise buildings in the downtown area, in contrast to contemporary designs. I hope they stick around, it makes Auckland interesting.
